Greggs chooses all-LED lighting for new store

LuxSpace
LEDs provide all the lighting for this new Greggs store in Bromley.

Bakery retailer Greggs is believed to be the first retailer in Europe to light the sales area of a store entirely with LED light sources. Compared to stores using conventional lighting, the new concept store in Bromley is expected to halve energy consumption for lighting and reduce carbon emissions by 2 t a year. Philips Lighting supplied the equipment.

Further savings in energy will be achieved through reduced air-conditioning requirements because of the low heat output of the LED fittings.

Garry Graham, shop premises manager with Greggs, says, ‘We had been following the progress of LED lighting for some time, waiting for it to offer the levels of performance and cost effectiveness we required. We are very pleased with the results at Bromley and will be evaluating the performance of the lighting with a view to including it in other stores in the future.’

The store uses a combination of ceiling-recessed ambient and spot-lighting, supplemented by under-shelf lighting. All fittings are LED alternatives to the fluorescent and CDM lamps that would normally have been used in a Greggs store.

Ambient lighting is provided by LuxSpace 19 W fixed recessed downlighters with a colour temperature of 3000 K.

Accent and graphic lighting is from 11 W fixed and adjustable spotlights with a 20° beam and a colour temperature of 2700 K.

The higher lighting levels required for work surfaces are achieved by additional eW Profile 3000 K under-shelf lighting using 4.5, 10 and 20 W fittings are required.

Maintenance costs will be reduced, as the long life of the LED lamps means that no relamping should be required during the life for the store. There will also be no discharge lamps to dispose of.
