LEDs are sole lighting source for new store
LED lighting plays a key role in minimising energy consumption in Morrisons’ pilot low-carbon superstore at Stanground near Peterborough. The project followed over a year of research and development, including the creation of a replica shopping aisle in which to carry out trials. The new 4160 m2 store is said to be the first full-LED scheme of its size in Europe. LED lighting is used within the store and also for the car park and petrol station.
Despite having higher capital costs than the traditional approach, the longer life of LEDs and associated reductions in maintenance mean that the project should pay for itself in three to four years.
The lighting solution was developed by Morrisons’ store building and maintenance partner NG Bailey working with Philips Lighting. Morrisons’ in-house electrical team also played a key role in breaking new ground.
Paul Beckwith, senior contracts engineer with NG Bailey, explains, ‘Traditionally, products have been lit by dedicated display-lighting luminaires separate to the background ambient lighting. The orientation and properties of the LED solution means it is possible to maintain ambient lighting levels and light the products with the same luminaires.
Lighting levels are automatically controlled, with output from the LED luminaires adjusted according to the natural light available. Natural light is maximised by not having false ceilings and installing northlights. SolarPV panels are mounted on the south side of the northlights.
‘The lighting solution has led to a significant reduction in the amount of energy used to light the whole Stanground estate — as much as 50%.’
Other energy-saving measures include recovering heat from refrigeration systems. High-grade heat is used to build up a store of hot water overnight, used mainly for washing down preparation areas.
Low grade heat is used to heat the store via a specially developed water-to-water heat pump system.
