Battery-disposal scheme for emergency lighting

Lumicom, G&P Batteries

A disposal infrastructure for batteries used in emergency-lighting products has been developed by Lumicom and G&P Batteries. The scheme is designed to help manufacturers and importers of emergency-lighting equipment meet their obligations under new waste-disposal regulations that come into force on 1 January 2010.

Ernest Magog, director of Lumicom, explains, ‘In developing a recognised and accredited recycling infrastructure, we hope to ensure that industrial nickel-cadmium are now included in a plan to ban these batteries for general use. Whilst in theory there are alternatives to NiCd rechargeable batteries, they are not as reliable or suitable for life safety equipment such as emergency lighting and will ultimately require a recycling infrastructure anyway.’
