Taconova helps to refurbish community heating project

Refurbished heating systems in this sheltered complex in Sussex is provided by a central boiler with decentralised substations supplied by Taconova.

As part of an energy-saving refurbishment of a sheltered residential complex in Sussex, Taconova has supplied equipment for the decentralised heating and metering system. The heating system for Britannia Court Gardens in Bosham is based on a high-efficiency central boiler with Danfoss heating substations providing the interface between the heat source and each of the 38 apartments. The development dates from the 1970s.

The decentralised design was specified by BSS Group and eliminates the need to provide a separate gas supply to each flat, saving on space, time and overall build costs. Equipment installed includes Danfoss VMTD-F substations, SD Setter balancing valves, RT-WP programmable room thermostats and Danfoss Sonometer 1000 energy meters.

The substations provide space heating and instantaneous hot water via a plate heat exchanger.

Local control of heating control is achieved by an integral zone valve in each substation. Apartment temperatures are maintained by Taconova programmable thermostats.

The SD Setter valves enable flow to be measured and regulated without affecting the main system. They eliminate the need for an additional shut-off device.

Metering and billing for each apartment are provided by the Sonometer 1000 energy meter — an ultrasonic meter with integral hardware and software for measuring flow rate, temperature and energy consumption. These meters can be remotely accessed for control and monitoring as part of a BMS via Modbus, RS 232, radio or an optical interface.
