New energy centre will halve hospital’s carbon emissions
Carbon emissions from a Lincolnshire hospital are expected to be halved following the completion of a new energy centre. The work at the Pilgrim Hospital in Boston was carried out under a Public Private Partnership between Cofely and the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. Cofely will operate and maintain the plant for 15 years, with guaranteed year-on-year savings for the trust across the site.
The new centre is set to reduce carbon emission by 5700 t a year and incorporates a range of low-carbon technologies — including CHP and a biomass boiler using locally sourced wood fuel. The boilers can be switched to bio-oil in the future if this fuel becomes economically viable.
Kevin Thoy, the trust’s environmental services manager, says, ‘Cofely’s experience in low-carbon technologies, combined with an understanding of the health sector, proved invaluable in choosing the best solution for the hospital in both the short and long term. Cofely also helped us to secure extra funding, including a £200 000 biomass grant from Lincolnshire County Council.’
