Ability fan-coil units contribute to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating

Abililty, fan coil units
The ability of Matrix fan-coil units from Ability Projects to control air volume by fan speed alone contributes to the energy efficiency of this Welsh Assembly regional office.

The installation of Ability Projects’ Matrix fan-coil units in the new £20 million Aberystwyth Regional Office of the Welsh Assembly provides infinitely variable speed control of the entire fan-coil unit and each fan in it — enabling each air duct to be balanced for air volume through fan speed alone. The building comprises 7700 m2 of open-plan office accommodation with meeting rooms on three floors and public area and staff restaurant on the ground floor. It is designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Controlling air volume by fan speed removes the need for noisy volume control dampers.

These cooling-only units were selected to meet an NR31 noise standard and were supplied complete with Trend IQ212 controllers with sensors and remote sensor setpoints supply and fitted by third party on site.

Cooling capacities range from 710 W to 3.37 kW against a pressure of 30 Pa.

Other services installed by MITIE’s Cardiff branch include natural ventilation, biomass boiler, solar panels, briese soleil shading and intelligent lighting controls.
