ICS achieves successful project outcome in six operating theatres

ICS (Eastern), BMS, controls
The control systems for six operating theatres in this hospital have been upgraded by ICS (Eastern).

The installation of a new building-management system in six operating theatres for Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey has been completed by ICS (Eastern). It was built in 1974 as one of six hospitals to exactly the same plan and serves north-east Hampshire and west Surrey. It also incorporated a fully integrated Ministry of Defence hospital unit with qualified military medics.

ICS upgraded the control system of the six theatres to integrate with an existing Trend BMS.

High-quality filtered air is supplied to the theatres, and stale air removed to reduce the risk of infection. Humidity is also controlled to prevent patient dehydration. All these services are controlled by a sophisticated system.

The system also automates several ‘air curtains’ around operating tables to help keep infection at bay. These systems can be accessed by the surgeon via a local control panel. The display screen enables the surgeon to view the temperate in the theatre and adjust it as required.

Colin Mapperley, general manger of facilities for the hospital, says, ‘ICS installed a precise control system that delivers optimal operating conditions. The old control panel needed changing to a new panel before any further upgrade work could be carried out, and ICS managed tight timescales to carry out the project sequentially for all the theatres overnight — causing minimum disruption to staff and patients.’
