BG helps Barnsley schools to a greener future

Penistone Advanced Learning Centre in Barnsley is one of five for which BG Controls is installing energy-efficient control technologies.

BG Controls is installing energy-efficient control technologies in five advanced learning centres as part of Barnsley’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. The BMS solution includes controls to the biomass boilers, natural ventilation, automatic control of windows and roof vents, rainwater harvesting and wind turbines. BG was appointed by Crown House Technologies.

Each school has its own wind turbine to generate electricity, with excess electricity exported to the National Grid. These schools also have gas-proving systems to automatically shut down appliances if they are left on, thus creating safer conditions.

A front end connected by an Ethernet link monitors the BMS, which meters the consumption of water, gas and electricity. Each centre will have a monitor in reception, where guests, visitors and pupils can view the information.

Mike Sauris, BG’s project manager, said, ‘This is a great project to be working on. The schools are all different in design, but have one common goal to use renewable energy sources and be environmentally friendly. BG Controls has made this possible by installing a cutting-edge control system designed to optimise the buildings’ energy efficiency.’
