Mini-CHP provides efficient energy for mill conversion

Substantial reductions in carbon emissions for social housing in Kirkcaldy are being made by this mini-CHP unit from SAV Systems.

SAV Systems mini-CHP system has helped a social-housing project in Scotland win one of Scotland’s Energy Efficiency Design Awards for 2009/10, with this refurbishment project being awarded over £100 000. The EC Power 15G unit can provide 6 to 15 kW of electricity and 17 to 30 kW of heat. There is no need to export surplus electricity to the grid as the system is controlled so there is no spare electricity. It has helped reduce carbon emissions by 65%.

The CHP unit was installed as part of the conversion of a listed former rope mill in Kirkcaldy into 16 separate flats for vulnerable young people, Consultants were Keenan Consultancy.

The site has a 24-hour demand for electricity, with less at night. Waste heat from the CHP unit is used to heat water via a heat exchanger. The heated water is held in a thermal store at around 80°C and used to provide heating and hot water as required.

To provide an interface between the store and the heating system in each apartment, SAV Systems supplied 16 FlatStations, which also provide instantaneous hot water on demand.

Integrated energy meters and a data logger monitor energy consumption and acquire data. Data can be read on site or transmitted over the Internet to the monitoring station that is operated by SAV Systems for all EC Power CHP projects in the UK.
