Xpelair Classmate specified for new primary school

Xpelair, mixed mode ventilation
Xpelair’s Classmate system provides space heating and passive and natural ventilation as required for this new primary school in Wales.

Xpelair’s mixed-mode system for natural and low-energy ventilation and heating has been specified and installed at a new school in Wales. The £9.5 million Williamstown Primary School in Rhondda is aiming to secure an A-rating for environmental standards. There are 12 classrooms, unit for special educational needs, hall, community room, IT facilities, library, soft play area and an outdoor environmental studies area. There are also a football field, changing rooms and multi-use games area.

The Xpelair Classmate system controls the learning environment by automatically reacting to CO2 levels, room occupancies and seasonal and daytime temperatures to maintain optimum indoor air quality. Modulating controls enable end users to control the airflow passively or use mechanical ventilation to maximise the use of free cooling.

The system is operated by a combination of CO2, temperature and time control. CO2 is controlled using only passive ventilation. Summer ventilation is provided by low-energy EC fans. Heating is by LPHW fan coils with controls.

The CO2 and temperature sensors automatically provide ventilation to maintain the required CO2 levels and temperature. There is a manual over-ride to modulate the high and low dampers as required.

Classmate exceed the requirements of Building Bulletins 93 and 101.
