LJJ delivers alternative energy approach

LJJ has completed the £14 million M&E installation at CLS Holdings’ Spring Mews mixed-used scheme in the Vauxhall Gardens conservation area south of the River Thames. The project was part of Shepherd Construction’s £40 million design-and-build programme.

The site includes accommodation for 378 students, with on-site gym, swimming pool, cinema and laundry facilities. There are also flexible office/retail units and a 93-bed Staybridge hotel operated by IHG Group and which is designed for guests with longer stay requirements.

The M&E installation has been designed around an energy centre with a geothermal heat-pump system comprising three heat pumps to supply over 80% of the development’s energy requirements — including heating, cooling and DHW. Waste heat from the cooling equipment is used to supply heating and DHW.

The energy centre uses an aquifer as an energy source. Heat produced by the building in the summer is stored in the ground for use in the winter.

Other plant includes boilers, thermal stores, calorifiers and plate heat exchangers. There are also dry-air cooling plant, CHP and solarPV at roof level.

Ronnie Elliot-Scott of Shepherd Construction said ‘Spring Mews was a complex project, and LJJ was able to answer the brief from a technical perspective while working collaboratively with our team to ensure that the scheme remained on schedule.’
