NIBE devises ground-source system for heating in new school in Wrexham

Two heat pumps served by 11 boreholes are a key part of the underfloor heating system in this new school at Wrexham.
Heating for a new school in Wrexham is provided by ground-source heat pumps serving underfloor heating. It was designed by NIBE Energy Systems and comprises 11 boreholes 100 m deep drilled into the school grounds before landscaping. The single-storey school accommodates 220 children from nursery age groups through the year six. Each borehole contains a plastic tube in an elongated U shape to circulate a glycol/water mixture in a closed circuit. Energy from the ground is delivered to two interconnected NIBE Fighter 1330 heat pumps, each with a capacity of 30 kW to serve the underfloor heating and provide hot water for all the school buildings. A gas boiler serves as back-up and to provide heat at times of maximum demand. The equipment for the project was designed and made by parent company NIBE AB of Sweden.
