ICB introduces new approach to solar photo-voltaic energy
CB’s Solyndra solar photo-voltaic system is based on tubes arranged in lightweight grilles. They can be installed on flat roofs or roofs with a low pitch. The system weighs 16 kg/m2 and can resist winds of up to force 12 without the need for additional anchoring. Installation time is said to be a third that required for conventional panels.
The tubes capture the power of direct sunlight and also diffused and reflected light on the sides and undersides of the tubes. Output can be increased by 20% with the use of a white Evalon single-ply membrane to reflect sunlight back on to the panels.
Because they are mounted flat, rather than inclined, the entire roof can be covered.
Air passing round the tubes keeps them cool, increasing the efficiency of the PV cells.
