Trend adds control of natural ventilation to its expertise
Trend Control System has introduced an intelligent window-control package that can be fully integrated within its BEMSs to maximise the benefits of natural ventilation. The use of WindowMaster’s MotorLink technology allows window positions to be controlled and monitored extremely accurately. Figures show that natural ventilation can achieve a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions compared with mechanical ventilation.
Because the technology is an integral part of the BEMS, control of windows can be easily co-ordinated with that of other HVAC services to improve energy savings and optimise conditions throughout a building. Since only one controls supplier is involved, confusion over contractual responsibilities is avoided.
Intelligent actuators for windows and vents and the motor controllers that power them make up the basic elements of the MotorLink package. The motor-control modules are BACnet-based. The can operate on IP or MS/TP networks and communicate directly (IP version) or via a router (MS/TP) with the rest of the BEMS, where Trend IQ controls implement the natural-ventilation strategy to determine when and how much each window should be opened or closed. Window operation is monitored through the BEMS supervisor (operator interface).
MotorLink provides precise feedback of window position, with millimetre control to ensure a stable indoor environment in all weather condition.
There is also a security benefit as a signal can be sent to confirm that all or selected windows are fully closed outside normal hours.
Trend’s approach overcomes the problem of interfacing a BEMS with separately supplied window controls. The opening and closing of windows must be co-ordinated with control of heating, air conditioning and supplementary mechanical ventilation.
Window operation is monitored and managed through the same Trend supervisors that are used for other BEMS functions.
