Helping to achieve very high standards of energy efficiency in new buildings at Belmarsh prison are pumps from Grundfos

Helping to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating for one of the buildings in the new Category B facility at Belmarsh Prison in London are pumps supplied by Grundfos. This £415 million PFI contract with Serco Group, with Skanska winning the £100 million contract for its design and build, comprises 10 buildings to house 900 inmates.

Facilities include the main houseblock, healthcare and education units, workshops, kitchens and facilitating buildings.

Consulting engineers Hulley & Kirkwood worked with key partners, including Grundfos, to achieve a high BREEAM standard. The houseblock achieved a worldwide first rating of ‘outstanding’ for such a building, and the other nine buildings achieved ‘excellent.’

Prisons must operate at capacity for 24 h a day, every day of the year. Helping to reduce energy consumption are Grundfos electronically controlled pumps for a wide range of services.
