Shopping centre project is uplifting experience for Flakt Woods
Restrictions in site access for the huge Westfield Stratford City shopping centre were overcome by Flakt Woods using a helicopter to position car-park jet fans as part of a huge 3-contract fan package for this recently opened development. This is the largest urban shopping centre in Europe and comprises 180 000 m2 of retail and leisure facilities. It is at the gateway to the site of the 2012 London Olympics.
Working in partnership with E&S on the car-park contract, Flakt Woods engineers installed 150 jet fans. They were prefabricated off site for delivery as plug-and-play units with controls and a strict noise-deadening acoustic design.
They were supplied as skid-mounted units to allow for testing before installation and halving installation time on site. To ensure smoke does not break out from the skid assemblies, fans are contained within fire-rated enclosures made by E&S using its Flameshield ducting, which is used throughout the car park.
These fans provide ventilation for day-to-day pollution and emergency smoke. Monitoring sensors run selected fans only when necessary.
Under a separate contract working for FCS Ductwork, Flakt-Woods supplied smoke-extract fans for the shops and mall areas.
The third contract was to supply and install smoke-extract and ventilation fans, plus controls, for walkways throughout the centre. These fans were part of a package of products supplied for Waagner-Biro.
