Airedale is chosen to deliver energy-efficient cooling for data centre

Airedale has been chosen as cooling partner for this new data centre in London to deliver energy-efficient cooling.

London Data Exchange, which provides network-independent colocation solutions and data centres, has chosen Airedale International Air Conditioning as its cooling partner. Airedale has designed a low-energy, resilient solution for LEeX1, a purpose-built £5 million 2000 m2 carbon-neutral data centre due to open in April 2012 and close to the south end of the M1.

The fully integrated cooling solution comprises high efficient, high-capacity SmartCool air-conditioning systems for three data halls and externally mounted condensers and DeltaChill free-cooling chillers.

The first phase has four 100 kW speed-controllable fans and multiple cooling stages for exact capacity match, saving substantial amounts of energy when running at part load.

Energy savings will be increased in the next phase when four 280 kW DeltaChill FreeCool dual-circuit chillers will supply 10 chilled-water SmartCool units. In the elevated temperatures of data centres, these chillers can provide concurrent free cooling for up to 95% of the heat. Cooling capacity will offer N+1 redundancy.

To maximise SmartCool’s cooling potential, reduce hot spots and prevent hot return air mixing with the room air, each unit will have a 1150 mm duct extension connecting into a 600 mm ceiling void supplied via return-air ceiling grilles above the hot aisles.

Rob Garbutt, CEO of LDeX, says, ‘We have invested in Airedale’s latest chilled-water and DX cooling technologies for the most efficient solutions, enabling us to target PUE of less than 1.3. Our environmentally responsive approach and carbon-neutral status helps our clients take a huge step towards their own environmental goals and carbon-reduction commitments.’
