Ruby McGregor-Smith of MITIE Group has been awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours List.

Ruby McGregor-Smith, chief executive of MITIE Group, has been awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours List. The award is for her services to business and diversity in business. She joined this FTSE 250 outsourcing and energy-services company in 2002 and was appointed CEO in 2007. She is one of a small number of women holding the position of chief executive in the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 and the first Asian woman to be appointed in such a role in that group of companies.

Since she joined MITIE, turnover has grown from £500 million to £1.9 billion, continuing the company’s 24 years of consecutive revenue and earnings growth. The group now has 62 000 employees, compared with 23 000 in 2003.

Ruby McGregor-Smith has become a national spokesperson on issues that include diversity in the workplace and on corporate boards, women in business, work life balance, sustainability, reducing energy consumption, providing opportunities for the long-term unemployed, apprenticeships in the UK, entrepreneurialism and growing businesses in recession.
