Prefabricated wiring systems

Hager, prefabricated wiring systems, electrical services

Hager has produced a free technical specification guide for prefabricated wiring systems covering the requirements of BS 8488:2009+A1:2010. Steven York, product manager with Hager, explains, ‘While it is agreed that prefabricated wiring systems are faster and easier to install, some systems have been associated with serious safety issues, such as reversed polarity, under-rated couplers and incorrectly sized wiring sections.’

This 28-page guide details specification, competency to certify products, application and design. It also covers the individual products within a typical prefabricated system and what needs to be considered in their specification.

Steve York says, ‘Liability for the installation could ultimately rest with the specifier, who has to ensure that the different elements such as distribution boards, cabling, installation couplers, marshalling boxes and luminaires all comply individually to the relevant British Standards and that collectively the system complies to BS 8488:2009+A1:2010.’
