Energy-efficient AHUs have star role in new school theatre

Flakt Woods, AHU, heat recovery
Energy-efficient ventilation for this new building at Yarm School is provides by eQ AHUs from Flakt Woods.

Highly efficient ventilation for the new performing-arts centre of Yarm School in North Yorkshire is provided by three eQ air-handling units from Flakt Woods. They were installed as part of a £20 million redevelopment programme to expand and update the school’s riverside campus. The centre was opened by Princess Alexandra and includes an 800-seat auditorium, separate galleries theatre, atrium, terrace, dance studio and music performance suite.

The energy-recovery air-handling units were specified by M&E consulting engineers Leeds Environmental Design Associates. Director Matthew Hill said, ‘The specification also required the equipment to operate at very low noise levels to avoid disturbing the occupants. Since their installation, the eQ units have performed brilliantly; everyone involved has been very impressed.

The eQ range of AHUs is available in 21 sizes with flow rates from 0.1 to 12.5 m3/s. They have integrated controls and built-in cooling systems with latent recovery. All models incorporate a Centriflow plenum fan with an impeller design to provide the highest efficiencies on the market.
