Cascade management of these Alpha boilers at an Edinburgh nursing home provides flexibility and tailored operation.

A nursing home in Edinburgh in Edinburgh is benefiting from flexible heating and hot water from a cascade boiler installation from Alpha Heating Innovation. Thorburn Nursing Home is a 34-bedroom resident near the city centre. Its heating system was designed and installed by McAusland, which had recently started using Alpha boilers on other projects.

Brian Gray, managing director of McAusland, used two Alpha CD70S boilers in cascade with a low-loss header and cascade management system. The control manager sequencing, time and temperatures of two heating circuits and one domestic-hot water circuit that supplies two 800 l cylinders.

One feature of the cascade manager is to raise the temperature in the cylinders to 60°C once a day to prevent the growth of legionella. The system also rotates the lead boiler at intervals to even out wear and tear.

There are two heating zones, each with weather compensation.

Justin Jearum, commercial product engineer with Alpha, says, ‘Our cascade-management system is designed exactly for situations like Thorburn. Working closely with Brian and the owners on the specification meant we could programme the system in line with their requirements.’

Alpha was also involved in commissioning the boilers.
