Trend in control at new RasGas headquarters

Helping to achieve LEED objectives in the operation of the RasGas headquarters in Qatar is a Trend BEMS.

The first building in Qatar to achieve LEED certification, the headquarters of RasGas, uses a BEMS from Trend Control systems to help monitor and maintain air quality and save energy. This 57-storey building has an hexagonal footprint and distinctive palm-shaped exterior. It accommodates over 1200 personnel. RasGas supplies LNG to countries across Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Ben Doherty, chief safety, health, environment and quality office at RasGas, explains, ‘This [LEED] third-party internationally recognised certification programme covers design, construction and operation to ensure that high-performance green buildings are sustainable and provide a healthy working environment for their occupants. To make sure we are able to continue to do this and use energy efficiently, we asked Orientals Al Malki to come up with a solution that could maintain air quality and save energy.’

The team from Orientals Al Malki was contracted for the supply, testing and commissioning of the BEMS. It is configured using IQ3 Trend controllers on each floor to control temperature and monitor air quality. There is a Trend open network node for system interfacing. VAV controls in-built with heaters in each office will ensure comfort.

Energy metering is covered by four electrical meters on each floor, with over 250 electrical meters plus 10 thermal meters in selected locations and a water meter in the basement. These contributed to the LEED certification process as part of the indoor environment quality assessment by helping to maintain air quality control, comfort conditions and energy metering.

The BEMS is connected over the RasGas IT network infrastructure and monitored centrally via a Trend 963 supervisor.

Oriental Al Malki followed this work with the installation and commissioning of Trend Energy Manager software. It enables designated administrators at RasGas to keep a close eye on the consumption of electricity, thermal energy and water. It will provide reports containing observations, advice, proposals and performance graphs that will help optimise energy consumption throughout the building.
