Dalkia helps green York

District heating based on wood chips is being operated by Dalkia on this housing development in York.

Dalkia has signed a 25-year agreement with the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust to supply renewable heating and hot water for the £100 million low-carbon housing development at Derwenthorpe, York. The contract includes expanding the existing biomass energy centre that provides district heating.

The development will provide over 500 residences for sale, rent and shared ownership. The first phase of 64 houses has been completed. Project completion is due in 2019.

All the homes will be supplied with heat and hot water from a communal heating system that relies heavily on biomass for heat generation. CO2 savings of over 60% are being made compared with burning natural gas. There is currently one 320 kW biomass boiler and two 640 kW natural-gas boilers.

The biomass boiler is fuelled by wood chips, and the gas-fired boilers are for top up when demand exceed the biomass capacity and for back-up.

The long-term plan is to create a total biomass heat capacity of 990 kW. At full build out, the biomass boilers are expected to use 18 t of wood chips a week, with two deliveries a week in the winter.

Dalkia is also responsible for billing and invoicing the associated households.
