Wago delivers modular wiring solution for new hospital in Glasgow

Wago, electrical, cable, modular wiring

Modular wiring solutions from Wago are playing a key role in the efficient and cost-saving installation of electrical services for the new South Glasgow Adult & Children’s Hospital. The lighting and electrical segments of the project are being undertaken by Mercury Engineering, based in Dublin. Integrated systems provided by Wago for the project, which has an overall cost of around £800 million, include modular wiring and intelligent control solutions.

One of the main requirements of the project was the need for connection to conventional systems and for trunking to incorporate both lighting and electrical circuits.

The general contractor had also specified co-ordinated construction sequences and a fairly tight implementation schedule.

Using products from Wago’s Winsta range, detailed plans were drawn up by Wago based on construction drawings by Mercury. The complete installation package defined the individual components and the required lead and trunking types.

The complete home-run solution included boxes with fully assembled TopJob S terminal blocks and a variety of Winsta modular plug-and-play connectors.

Equipment supplied included various leads, as well as 4-pin and 5-pin connectors and sockets coded blue for lighting and green for power in the trunking. In all, around 55 000 5-pin blue connectors and sockets were installed as well as 25 000 5-pin green sockets and 30 000 4-pin green connectors and sockets. The complete home-run solution was assembled at Wago’s headquarters and fully equipped with the necessary TopJob S terminals.

Limiting the components used to the home-run boxes and only six different Winsta components, with which the leads were equipped in the trunking, minimised on-site installation costs and significantly reduced the time required.

Deliveries were carefully scheduled to ensure accurate monitoring of which items were required at what point on the site. A labelling system with special numbers enabled unique assignments to be made at the site and ensured leads were installed correctly and according to plan.

Construction is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2015.
