New boilers slash cost of heating for care home
Gas savings of up to 40% are expected to be achieved by a care home following the replacement of old atmospheric floor-standing boilers with wall-hung condensing boilers from Ideal Commercial Boilers. The savings could amount to £6000 a year. The work was carried out by New Forest District Council at Barfields Court Care Home in Lymington.
There are 39 flats providing independent living and extra-care housing and services for elderly residents with a variety of special-care needs.
The three new Evomax boilers have outputs of 80 kW and replace the four old boilers.
Rob Sowden, commercial gas engineer for New Forest District Council, said, ‘We selected Evomax boilers as we have installed them and Ideal Commercial frame and header kits at a number of other sites.’
The boiler room at Barfields Court is below ground and accessed by 13 concrete steps, so the new boilers needed to be easy to manoeuvre. Rob Sowden adds, ‘There was a lack of height in the boiler room because of existing pipework across the ceiling, so the new low-height kits were perfect for this installation.’
To provide heating while the new boilers were installed, one of the old boilers was kept in service. When the time came to complete the changeover, the heating was off for just one night.
Because the flue specialist could not work during the night, a temporary horizontal flue kit was installed to enable one Evomax boiler to be brought into service until the new internal flue could be installed by the specialist flue contractor.
