Replacement chillers boost performance for Swindon Hospital

Cool-therm, chiller, air conditioning, chilled water, R410A

Cool-Therm has supplied two low-temperature Tonon chillers for a major replacement project at Swindon Hospital. The project was carried out with Carillion and harnesses the low-temperature performance of these multi-scroll industrial chillers using a reduced charge of R410A.

The units provide chilled water to the catering department. They each deliver 65 kW at -7°C and replace aging chillers rated at 50 kW at -2°C.

Cool-Therm also installed bespoke low-temperature fan coils in the cold rooms to take advantage of the lower temperatures and maintain cold rooms at a lower temperature.

The cooling system is designed with an N+1 complete backup system. The chillers were replaced over two weekends and commissioned without the site losing production of chilled water.

The Tonon chillers have three Sanyo scroll compressors. The previous chillers had reciprocating compressors.

Cooling capacity has been increased by about 30% without increasing energy consumption.
