RDM upgrades controls for Edinburgh Playhouse

RDM, Resource Data Management, BMS, controls, quick fixes

To achieve a standard service replacement of the existing HVACR control panel and assets at Edinburgh Playhouse, Resource Data Management (RDM) controls were selected to replace failing controls from packaged plant and the existing third-party BEMS. The open-protocol solution is helping this theatre deliver optimal environmental conditions and comfort for visitors, while reducing energy consumption.

The solution controls multiple aspects of the H&V system and utilises the RDM range of intuitive controllers and free-license PLC software, TGB. The new installation was completed by J. Fletcher Engineers.

Bespoke control algorithms were created using the TDB software, which J. Fletcher Engineers found to be powerful, given its programming flexibility and free custom blocks.

PLC controls were used to deliver efficient control of the heating, ventilation and DHW systems — providing optimised start, weather compensation and demand-based control.

RDM says that while a similar level of control could have been achieved with other PLC software and controls from other suppliers, it would have been more complicated and expensive.

The scalability of the RDM solution — particularly the open protocols, expansions and remote monitoring — minimised initial investment costs and enabled the system to be proved in its simplest format first.

The TDB software is made available to all users free from the outset without requiring a large minimum annual spend.
