Dunham-Bush heats new Tonbridge School library

Dunham-Bush, space heating, fan convector, trench heating

Dunham-Bush Pedestal Finvector perimeter heating units and fan-assisted Aerocourse trench heating have been installed in the new Smythe Library at Tonbridge School as part of a £6.1 million refurbishment undertaken by Buxton Contractors. He heating design was by BDP’s London office.

Trench heating was chosen as the most suitable solution for heating in the library, stairwell and office areas, where space was at a premium to accommodate over 21 000 books — including the oldest book in the collection, the Jenson Bible dating back to 1479. Some 50 m of fan-assisted trench heating was installed.

The AFA-1 trench-heating units were finished with 180 mm-wide solid-oak grilles to add to the aesthetics of the project.

The stairwell areas were fitted with AFA-2 heating units and finished with 270 mm-wide solid-oak grilles to match the flooring.

Both types of heating in the learning support offices were fitted with anodised-aluminium grilles.

In the Chan Café, which was added to the building as a community gathering area, 40 bespoke pedestal-style Finvectors (pictured) were selected to fit neatly and unobtrusively into the window alcoves of the café and study areas. Colour-co-ordinated casings and grilles added to the overall aesthetics.
