Energy-efficient lighting is provided throughout the new global headquarters in Sussex of aviation-support company Avtrade by luminaires from Thorn Lighting — internally and externally. Avtrade is committed to sustainability and wanted an environmentally friendly design that would meet budget constraints.

The project features a range of green technologies, including ground-source heat pumps, CHP, natural ventilation and energy-efficient LED lighting technology.

The location in rural Sussex on the site of a former egg farm led to the planning authority being concerned at the possibility of light pollution caused by road and car-park lighting, so in-depth calculations and modelling were carried out to allay the planning authority’s fears.

Specline recessed LED modular with a choice of optics provides lighting for the offices. The luminaires deliver up to 3700 lm at 79 lm/W with a connected load per fitting of 47 W.

T32 Chalice luminaires are used in corridors and the reception area to provide a lifetime of up to 50 000 h, significantly reducing maintenance requirements and costs.

Thorn’s high-output energy-saving fluorescent Hi-Rack was chosen for the warehouse to provide a longer life than HID alternatives, reducing maintenance. Hi-Rack incorporates dimming and sensor capabilities to reduce lighting to as little as 10%.

The completed development comprises two separate office buildings totalling 4800 m2 and a warehouse building of 8300 m2.
