Hamworthy ensures a warm welcome at the Star Inn

Hamworthy equipment provides the new heating and hot-water services for one of Britain’s oldest inns

One of the country’s oldest inns, The Star Inn at Alfriston, has upgraded its heating and hot-water system using Hamworthy Milborne wall-hung boilers, flues and calorifiers to serve 37 guest rooms, restaurant, bars and kitchen. The equipment was specified by Andy Tugwell, managing director of TSS Facilities, which also carried out the installation work.

Andy Tugwell says, ‘We suggested three options to the owners, but advised them that the Hamworthy products were in our opinion the best choice to provide the optimum requirements for the hotel’s 37 rooms, commercial kitchen, restaurant and bars — and they agreed with us.’

The versatile flueing options of the Milborne boilers were helpful on this project. The boiler room is at the back of the hotel overlooking the domestic buildings, and the route for the flue was difficult. Being able to use polypropylene flues was simpler. TSS operatives could cut the flues to size themselves, without the need for a specialist flue contractor.

The project includes frame sets complete with pipework header kits for water flow and return, condensate drainage and gas supply. An inline primary circuit kit with a low-loss header takes care of all hydraulic requirements for the primary system and ensures correct flow across each boiler module at all times. Two Powerstock PS 500 high-performance calorifiers complete the installation. They provide 940 l of storage and a continuous output of 2220 l/h of hot water.
