District-heating scheme in apartment development keeps gas boilers centralised

MHS Boilers, district heating, space heating
87 Nexus heat interface units in an apartment development at Sandwell are served by centralised condensing boilers to provide energy-efficient heating and hot water

Energy-efficient district heating for a £12 million residential development for people aged over 55 is provided by nearly 1000 MW of condensing-boiler capacity serving heating interface units in the apartments. The Ultramax boilers and 87 Nexus Bitherm wall-mounted units were supplied by MHS Boilers. There are also communal facilities, including a shop, restaurant and gym.

Brian Taft, project manager for contractor SPI, specified the Nexus units because they were cost effective and had integrated plate heat exchangers, eliminating the need for hot-water storage cylinders in each apartment. Nexus units do not require annual servicing, unlike individual boilers in each apartment.

Queensridge Court in Sandwell, West Midlands, is being built in partnership with Sandwell Council and the Housing & Communities Agency for Housing 21 by SPI. M&E consultant is Faarup Associates.
