Balfour Beatty starts work on new academy

Balfour Beatty

The £3.6 million M&E services contract for a new academy in Aberdeenshire has been won by Balfour Beatty Engineering Services. The new-build Mearns Academy High School in Laurencekirk will accommodate 840 pupils. It will have a range of sports facilities — including a 4-court games hall, gym, fitness suite and sports pitches. The contract was awarded by Lend Lease.

Sustainable aspects include biomass boilers and lighting controls. The project will utilise off-site manufacturing solutions where possible, including co-ordination of M&E services, prefabrication of bracketry and skids for plant.

Work is due for completion by summer 2014 ready for the following academic term.
