Every little helps at Tesco distribution centres

Dalkia’s CarbonCare service is reducing costs by over £1.1 million at 26 Tesco distribution centres — and is to be rolled out across more of them.
Tesco is achieving costs savings on excess of £1.1 million a year, following the adoption of a lighting and energy improvement programme from Dalkia for its distribution centres. Dalkia’s integrated approach to cost and carbon savings, CarbonCare, is delivering energy savings in line with Tesco’s policy to reduce electrical consumption. CarbonCare is being implemented across 26 of Tesco’s large distribution centres. The services cover the optimisation of gas, electricity and water usage; retrofitting new control systems; upgrading heating; ventilation and dehumidification equipment in refrigerated zones of the centres; replacing all inefficient lighting with modern energy-efficient units; installing effective lighting control linked to sensors ; and improving maintenance schedules and programmed works. The success of the plan and Dalkia’s knowledge of the sites is leading to phase two being rolled out across 15 depots over a 42-month payback period. The areas of improvement of the first phase can be seen in the ambient zones, which have gained from higher-performance heating, ventilation and lighting. New and improved control systems have been enhanced to optimise energy efficiency. Lighting levels have been significantly increased to provide the same light level, but with better colour rendition and lower energy costs. Effective controls in the offices ensure efficient use of daylight through the 24 h work day. Occupancy sensors switch off any lights that are not needed by the office staff. Ken Carter, energy consumption manager with Tesco, says, ‘Working with Dalkia, we have now improved the energy efficiency within our distribution centres, and this has provided significant and sustainable cost savings.’
