BG Controls helps maximise building’s green credentials

BG Controls
Natural ventilation and ground-source heating and cooling in this new building in Yorkshire are controlled by a system designed by BG Controls.

BG Controls has helped the Environmental Energy Technology Centre (EETC) at Waverley near Sheffield to maximise its green credentials by controlling its natural-ventilation and underfloor heating and cooling systems. Built on the site of the redundant Waverley coal mine, the EETC is a low-carbon building designed around renewable energy.

Its eco-friendly technologies include wind turbines, heat pumps, cooling slabs and natural ventilation. Owned by Yorkshire Forward, it provides office and workshop space for businesses developing innovative environmental energy technologies.

BG was commissioned by Hurst Building Services to install and integrate the natural-ventilation system and enable the ground-source heating and cooling. BG engineers installed a BMS connected to controllers via the BACnet open protocol. The two motor-control panels were specially designed and made by BG.

Natural ventilation is controlled according to temperature and CO2 levels in the offices. Windows are opened and closed automatically as required.

The underfloor heating and cooling system is also connected to the BMS.

BG can remotely monitor the natural ventilation and underfloor heating and cooling from its own continuously manned service bureau.
