Sports-hall heating is a top performer

AmbiRad, Nor-Ray-Vac, radiant heating
Effective and efficient heating for this new school sports centre is provided by AmbiRad’s Nor-Ray-Vac system.

A state-of-the-art sports centre at St John’s Beaumont School is the latest of over 700 sports halls in the UK to be heated using AmbiRad’s Nor-Ray-Vac radiant heating system. The new sports centre includes a 9 m climbing wall, indoor cricket facilities, performing arts centre, rowing room and a gymnasium alongside the main athletics hall. A draping system can turn it into a marquee environment for plays and prize givings.

The requirements for the heating system were for it to be separate from the school’s boilers and warm up quickly when needed. It also had to have superb temperature control, able to be cool enough for athletics and warm enough for seated people during school events.

The capabilities of the Nor-Ray-Vac system enable different areas to be warmed differently — for example spectators and sports areas. The SmartCom3 controller enables heating to be controlled so accurately.

The system is based around two radiant branches, each connected to a 32LR and 24 LR burner. To comply with the acoustic requirements of BB93 of the Department for Education & Skills, the fan that draws air into the burners and heating system was enclosed in an acoustic enclosure located remotely from the hall. Other noise-reduction features have been incorporated.

The Nor-Ray-Vac system qualifies for Enhanced Capital Allowances.
