BREEAM’s greenest office block is in Bristol

BREEAM

Westmark’s new headquarters building for the Environment Agency in Bristol has achieved the highest ever BREEAM score for an office building. The overall score of 85.06% under BREEAM 2006 is one of only four scores above 80% and is the result of the extensive use of sustainable features, onsite practices and building materials by Sir Robert McAlpine and supply-chain partner Prater.

Working with the main contractor, Prater identified materials that could be sourced from responsible and sustainable manufacturers, with low mileage to the point of use and a high recyclable content.

Technologies in Cabot House include natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting, ground-source heat pumps, 100 m2 of solar PV, waterless urinals, water metering, intelligent lighting and meadow-grass turfing on external terraces. All will help to reduce the Environment Agency’s operational and energy costs by 10%.

M&E consultant is Hoare Lea.
