ICS replaces R22 chillers

R22 chillers serving the unit at Liverpool University have been replaced by ICS Cool Energy.

The continued operation of the Magnetic Resonance & Image Analysis Centre (MARIARC) at the University of Liverpool beyond the end of 2014 has been assured following the replacement of three R22 chillers by ICS Cool Energy. This shared research facility contains two high-resolution MRI scanners, which make detailed images of soft tissues that are used in a variety of research projects and also to provide a diagnostic service for the NHS.

Three existing chillers were replaced with two energy-efficient TAEevo units, both with 5 bar pumps to support the MRI scanners.

Richard Metcalfe, sales director, explains, ‘We ethically removed and disposed of the existing three units as they were beyond economic repair and contained R22 refrigerant. As of 1 January 2015, R22 refrigerant will no longer be able to be replaced, and we recommend that companies begin the phase out now.’

ICS engineers positioned the bespoke new units and rebuilt the pipework, electrical, mechanical and interconnecting signalling to the remote control panels. As the existing chillers had pumps on board under a condenser, the new units were similarly set up, but with the pumps behind the chillers to make them much easier to service.
