John Lewis opts for refrigerant with GWP less than CO2

Low-GWP refrigerant R1234ze is used in an Airedale TurboChill chiller serving this new John Lewis store in York.

An Airedale TurboChill chiller using refrigerant R1234ze serves the air-conditioning system of the £15 million John Lewis store in York. It is said to be the first UK-manufactured chiller using a refrigerant with a GWP (global warming potential) less than that of CO2.

In contrast, R410A has a GWP of 2088. The GWP of R134a is 1430.

The refrigerant used in this project breaks down very quickly in the atmosphere — 16.4 days compared with 14 years for R134a.

There are also benefits for BREEAM certification. A TurboChill free-cooling chiller with R1234ze automatically receives two BREEAM points for its low GWP.

Other features of this store include low-energy lighting and solar PV cells on the roof.
