New lighting system cuts electricity use by 64%

Electricity and maintenance cost have been reduced by £2300 a year following the installation of new luminaires with T5 lamps and high-frequency electronic ballasts to replace 400 W high-pressure-sodium (SON) lamps with magnetic ballasts in high-bay fittings. Electricity use has been reduced by about 64%.

Not only was the previous lighting on continuously, even when the sports hall at Moreton School in Shropshire was not in use, but the lighting was of poor quality and not ideal for sports activity or exams.

TGE group reviewed the lighting and prepared a Relux simulation to determine the best new lighting system. Comparing a range of options, including LED variants, showed that the best solution would be Tamlite Hilux luminaires with T5 high-output lamps and high-frequency ballasts. The system delivers flicker-free cool-white light to College Badminton standard.

The installation can deliver full brightness for sports and half brightness for non-sporting uses such as examinations. An Ex-Or occupancy sensor switches lights off automatically.

The new T5 lamps last much longer than the old SON lamps and are much cheaper. There are four lamps in each fitting, rather than one SON lamp as previously. The effect of a lamp failing is much less than before, enabling lamp replacement to be planned en masse.
