SPIE wins major M&E education project

SPIE, contractor

SPIE UK has been awarded an £8 million contract for M&E works at East Ayrshire Council’s new William McIlvanney Campus in Kilmarnock. Named after the world-renowned author, who was born and educated in Kilmarnock, the £45.3 million, 18 360 m2 campus will accommodate about 1465 secondary, 383 primary and 160 early-years pupils from ages two to 18 and will be provided by East Ayrshire Council and Hub South West Scotland through Scotland’s Schools for the Future programme.

The M&E contract was awarded by Kier Construction and follows the completion of a £7 million multi-services contract at North Ayrshire Council’s 17 000 m2 Garnock Community Campus, along with some other 40 Scottish education wins over the past 10 years.

The installation will include a daylight-linked PIR lighting control system, including absence detection in classrooms, which reflects SPIE’s expertise with energy-saving solutions whilst contributing to energy management on campus.

The architects, NORR, have designed the campus to minimise overall energy consumption whilst adapting to a variety of interactive and collaborative teaching and learning needs.

The new campus will accommodate the merger of Kilmarnock Academy, James Hamilton Academy, New Farm Primary & Early Childhood Centre and Silverwood Primary.
