Green roof adds to the environmental credentials of Suffolk development
ICB’s Diadem green roof concept has been used on the award-wining Clay Fields housing project in Suffolk to reduce the need for drainage and achieve a lower carbon footprint.
Designed by architect Riches Hawley Mikhail for Orwell Housing Association, Elmswell Parish Council and Suffolk Preservation Society, the development also includes the use of sheep’s wool as insulation, a biomass community heating system and rainwater recycling.
The 200 m2 of Diadem green roof installed on four storage buildings also enhances the aesthetics of the project. It reduces the need for heating and air conditioning by maintaining a more constant temperature.
This warm roof consists of four layers — deck, vapour barrier, insulation and Evalastic (EDPM). A protection fleece, drainage layer, filter fleece and 40 mm of growing medium with the sedum blanket are laid on top.
The Diadem system comprises over 300 components — from sedum mats to drainage layers, edge trims and harness — so any project can receive a bespoke solution.
